Dress Code for a party?

I work for one of the world’s largest engineering firms. I’m somewhere in the middle of the ladder. They are holding thier annual Holiday party soon. After I RSVP to the invite they come out with a dress code. Men are to wear a Jacket and tie. Ok I have a suit and no big deal to wear it other than chocking on a tie. James my new partner does not have a jacket or suit. In order to attend and fit in one would have to be bought. He doesn’t have the money to do so. I woul dhave to buy one and have no problem doing so. However he says he has no other reason to wear one and wouldn’t be used again. My suit I haven’t worn in over a year and can see his point.

So what would you do. Buy a Jacket and go. Wear something outside the dress code, like slacks and a dressy sweater, or just not go? I don’t want my new bf to feel out of place. I also know there are others in the company that make less than I do, who can not afford fancy clothes. So I think it was wrong of my company.
Yes Im and openly *** man in my company. Many know I have a bf. I simply dont wanthim to feel out of place. I thought it was a party. Not a dog and pony show. How can one party in a suit?
