i’m going to be road tripping to mexico for vacation, can you help me?
I live in Las Vegas, Nevada
..&I’m planning a road trip to Mexico for either Spring Break or Summer (for my birthday in June).
I have a few questions.
We’re considering Cabo San Lucas or Cancun.
Well actually anywhere that has beaches, hotels, and maybe a few night clubs or raves that will disregard the fact that my sister is seventeen.
She will be coming along is under the drinking age. She’s 17, not 18, and i’m wondering if that will be a big deal? She wants to party too 
Everyone so far has told me to go to Cancun vs. going to Cabo.
what’s a few differences between the two?
Also,
Do you think there would be any hotel availability if we just tried to get a room once we got there?
Does it matter how old you are if you want a hotel room?
Can I pay in cash? (USD)
What are the gas prices like in Mexico?
Any tips for my vacation?
Feel free to tell me about your experiences in mexico (good and bad!)
I need all the input I can get.

Do you realize that a trip to Cancun would be almost 3000 miles and take 4 full days of driving in very challenging circumstances? Some highways are great, some are awful. It is way beyond unwise to drive at nite in Mexico. Road closures, missing signs, bad weather, washouts, etc. can make it worse. This is not an appropriate drive for young ladies to take. It would not save you money either. Gas is about $2.80 a gallon, but there are many tolls and you would need to spend at least 3 nites in hotels along the way. You would need to pay for a Mexican car permit and buy Mexican car insurance. You REALLY need to fly. Right now there are about 11.25 pesos to the dollar. Don’t know how old you are, but the parents of the 17 yr old would have to be out of their minds to give permission for her to go..and she absolutely must have a letter of permission signed by both parents and notarized …it is Mexican law. It would be far wiser to choose a location in the U.S.

No. Not for things imported into Mexico, and a few other things.
Cancún would be a very long drive. From Las Vegas you are looking at around 70 hours of driving each way.
Coming from Las Vegas. Mazatlan would make more sense for you….
Gas is cheaper, but the intercity super highways are toll roads (they are not cheap). You don’t have to use toll roads, but that would add to the time.
You will have to get Mexican car insurance.
I would not recommend driving in Mexico if you have never been there. There are some differences. Except form within cities and on toll roads, you should never drive at night. One reason is that in Mexico, there are speed bumps across roads. They are usually clearly marked, but you have to keep your eyes open for them (More difficult at night, especially on roads with no lighting). You don’t want to hit one at full speed.

Terrible idea for spring break in places that will be packed with tourists, and all beach resort areas will be.
Things will be easier in summer, one reason that the hotels at beaches are more available in summer is that it is very hot and humid.
Be careful when looking at prices online. You need to know if the prices are in dollars or pesos. It can be confusing since both us the $ symbol.
The exchange rates are constantly changing. During July and August when I was in Mexico, the rate were around 10 pesos to the dollar. The pesos is currently at around 11.12 pesos to the dollar. At banks or exchange offices you will get just under 11.
So a hotel listed at $1,100MXN a night is $100USD.

As Charlie said, driving to Cancun will take four day. So it you olny have a week, you have to turn around as soon as you get there.
Here’s another option. Click the first link to read about Puerto Penasco (also known as Rocky Point). If you cross the border at Lukeville, AZ - Sonoyta, Sonora Mexico, it’s about an hours drive to Puerto Penasco. Click the third link to read reviews of 14 Puerto Penasco hotels. This way you’ll have more time relaxing in Mexico. Here they may not card your sister if she looks and acts mature.
Two months ago, regular gas (Magna Sin) was about $2.50 per gallon, but the Mexican government has been slowly raising the prices to get it more in line with the US prices.
Save Cancun for a time when you can afford to fly there.
